Exercising the vacuum cleaner can help to improve the housework of the elderly in institutions for the care of elderly people. It is commonly held that the effects of housework on the residents' well-being depend on the "quality" of the housework and on "contentment" and "intensity". Using a vacuum cleaner causes mainly no complaints and can improve the "intensity" of housework. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a training programme for the use of the vacuum cleaner on the "quality" of housework. Forty-five residents in a nursing home (male n = 28, female n = 17) were assigned to two groups, A and B. Group A received the training while Group B didn't. The "quality" of housework was evaluated before and after the training period using two systems, "Dependents' Ombudsman" and "Achleitner instrument". Additionally, the "intensity" of the housework was measured with a newly developed instrument. The mean values before and after the training period were calculated. As regards the "Dependents' Ombudsman" a significant improvement could be found for Group A. The number of "necessary" tasks could be lowered by about one third after the training period. The mean values of the "Achleitner instrument" were slightly raised. The significance of this was not clear. In contrast to this, the mean values of the "intensity" did not change.
